In 2021, a staggering fifty-three combined sewer overflows (CSOs) released upwards of 126 million gallons of sewage into the Charles River.
Sewage in our river is a public health crisis. CSOs expose our communities to pollutant-laden water, carrying bacteria, excess nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and even harmful PFAS compounds. And, they are becoming more frequent as climate change brings increased precipitation and stronger storms.
We deserve clean, healthy rivers. Join us to call for an end to CSOs, once and for all.
On Thursday, December 15th at 6PM, the City of Cambridge, the City of Somerville, and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) are hosting their second virtual public meeting to discuss Combined Sewer Overflow Control Planning.
Let’s finish the job of cleaning up Boston Harbor and the rivers that flow into it! Attend the meeting, ask questions, and express concerns you have about sewage in the Charles River.

The City of Cambridge, the City of Somerville, and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) are working together to update the Combined Sewer Overflow Long-Term Control Plan (LTCP) to reduce sewage in our rivers. This update will use future climate predictions to anticipate the impact extreme weather and increased rainfall will have on CSOs, and help prioritize actions to keep sewage out of our rivers.
